New stray cat

We had a new stray show up a week ago. We were out by the chicken pen and Lee made mention that he thought he heard a cat meowing. I told him that I didn’t hear a cat. Then I walked over to look in the barn and sure enough there was this little black cat meowing it’s head off. After a little coaxing it came over and I was able to pick it up. The poor thing was all bones and was light as a feather. We weren’t staying in the house at that time so we put out food and water for it every day when we came over in the evenings.

The little black cat we are guessing is around 4 to 5 months old. It is also blind in one eye and a female. I decided to call her Jack after the pirate called One Eyed Jack of course. My sister complains that I call all my girl animals boy names. I’m just lousy at girl names though and can’t seem to help myself. Jack was at one time someone’s cat as she is beyond friendly. Stray cats just don’t get that way unless someone spends a lot of time handling them. I’m also at a loss on why someone would dump her since she is so sweet. I guess their unwanted loss is our unexpected gain. In just the week that she has been living in our barn she has put on a lot of weight. I plan on letting her be an inside/outside cat if she wishes. Next week I will bring her to the vet to see if she has feline leukemia along with getting her eye looked at.

Aw. so sweet. And good for you for adopting her. We lost a much loved cat a little over a month ago, completely disappeared. As much as I wish her back, I just hope someone has taken her in and loved her. As far as girls’ names, how about Jackie?

She’s cute! Which vet do you go to?

Jack Sparrow would be cool, but that’s also a girl. Jackie seems like a smart alternative, or maybe Jackie O.

Hey Robin – Jack is adorable – she looks like she has long hair? I hope she is disease free! I wonder where she came from, why someone dumped her off. Maybe because of her eye? I have a cat named Jack, too. But he’s a boy! I often call him Jackie or Jack Sprat or Jackie O, or Jack Sparrow, or many other nicknames. He’s hunting in my kitchen right now – he swears there’s a mouse in there, and he’s the best mouser there is…

    Good luck with your Jack!

How did Lee get her to hold still and quit loving on him for long enough to get a picture? When I tried to hold her she was so busying trying to ram her head on me and knead whatever part of me she could reach it was impossible to get a good look at her bad eye.

Lynn- Yup, she has long hair and I swear it is the softest hair that I have ever felt on a cat. She had a vet visit yesterday and had the “works” done on her. She is disease free thankfully and she got the first two of her shots. The eye looks to be scar tissue from an old herpes infection so it won’t get better. There is a river (and park) that runs very near to our house. We get a lot of stray cats around here. I think that people try to drown them or just drop them out in the country because they don’t want them anymore. I love the name Jack as there are so many humorous sayings to go with it. Hopefully your Jack catches that mouse in the kitchen. I have no sympathy for mice once they try to come inside the house as I HATE mouse poop!

Jessica- it was a challenge. You should come over and inspect the new and healthy Jack. She is turning into a little chunk who’s hobbies include lots of snuggling. You are going to be wishing that you took her home as she could show your cat how to snuggle for hours. Hildy wouldn’t like it though…
