A new theme for a new year

Robin and I have been working on a new website theme for the last two weeks, and it’s finally online tonight. We hope the new theme will make the site easier to read and more interactive. Some of the key features include:

  • New Robin-approved banner graphics
  • Cleaner page content and comments layout
  • Threaded comments allow direct responses
  • Recent comments reported in the sidebar
  • Optional avatars put a face to a name

Feedback on the new theme is welcome. If something looks odd or doesn’t work, please leave a comment and include your browser name and version. The site was developed on Linux for Firefox 3.0+, but I want it to work for any modern standards-compliant browser. Code for our theme was based on the Twenty Ten theme provided with the latest WordPress 3.0 release.

    Looks good!

Very nice indeed. Love the golden rectangle for the photos. I’m using Chrome browser for Linux and it interprets the code just fine. I always wonder about a black background though. Maybe because I’m older and black isn’t easy on the eyes. Maybe a really, really dark brown?

Do you mean the text in this area is on a black background? Because it’s supposed to be white here. If not, something is wrong. Most people find white text on black harder to read.

By the way, I’m really impressed that you noticed the golden rectangle spiral in the layout. I was going for something aesthetically pleasing, but I didn’t expect anyone to identify the method behind the madness. 🙂

Very nice, I like the threaded comments.

  4. looks very clean! As someone who is still messing with my own theme for my blog it can take some getting used to..the biggest thing for me was the categories and the dates for menu linking. keep up the good posts!

    • lee says:

Yeah, our categories have gone through a number of revisions, and even now I’m not thrilled with the names on a couple. We also went back and forth regarding tags. Some people claim it helps visitors find content faster. I’ve personally never used them on someone’s site.

The archive list received a major update with this new theme. Our archive now acts like the one available on Blogspot (which I like), but I’m still debating the usability of it. I think many people might click the year name without realizing the arrow will open up the list of months.

I like it when you had your blog name at the top of the page. Looks good though, and the threaded comments are an improvement.

Hmm, another comment about the theme I’m confused by. Do you see the banner across the top with the pictures in progressively smaller rectangles? If it’s there, the blog name is in the far left block. Should be very visible. Perhaps this banner isn’t showing … ?

      • Charity says:

No I don’t see any banner. All I see as far as pictures go is a little square in the top right corner that has flowers/beans/pigs in smaller squares.

        • lee says:

Okay, something’s definitely broken then. Do you know what browser and version you are using? I’ve tested Firefox and Chrome so far. Guess I need to test an older Firefox and dig out a Windows box to test Explorer.

          • Charity says:

Aha, it’s IE. have IE at work and couldn’t see it, I can’t remember what version it is though. When I check it at home with Firefox I see it just fine.

        • lee says:

I found and fixed a bug in my theme code. It’s very likely that IE was breaking when it hit this. Anyone with IE, please let me know if the colorful banner across the top is still missing! Thanks. 🙂

Nice job on the layout. Clean and simple, and a nice approach to the comments. Well done.

It seems to load fine on my Mac, running Firefox 3.6.13

    Hey guys,
Looks great. Love the pictures. Keep it up.

Thanks! Also … yay, somebody with a Gravatar! 🙂
