Paper weed block

We are trying out a new weed block this year. We still used the garden bio-film around the tomatoes but decided to use a recycled paper weed block around the peppers. It’s always fun experimenting with new things. The recycled paper weed block was cheaper than the bio-film but it was a pain to set up. The wind would catch the paper and blow it over which didn’t seem too great for the pepper plants. It seems to be holding up well though.

So, if I’m understanding you correctly, you’re holding the paper down with just those little piles of earth? What happens in really strong winds? How does this stuff hold up in rain?

    Nothing like trying something new!

Yup, little piles of dirt are holding it down. It’s how we hold the black bio-film down too. It’s been windy a few times and hasn’t seemed to mess with the paper. So far it’s holding up well. It rips easy, but so does the bio-film. When it gets wet from the drippers it looks like wet paper but then dries out fast. I like the bio-film for helping give more reflected heat back to the pepper. It will be interesting to see how our pepper harvest turns out. If it is ok then it is a cheaper then the bio-film which is nice.
