Goals 2010

This page is an attempt to enumerate the many tasks we hope to accomplish during 2010. It is here to organize our activities and is neither an exhaustive nor an imperative list. Items will be crossed out as they are accomplished with a link to the relevant blog post, if any.

Gardening

  • Improve summer garden yield
    • Build soil nutrition: Adding Solomon’s COF at required rates, compost in fall
    • Upgrade watering system: Drip irrigation is amazing
    • Better weed control: Nope. Cardboard + straw seems to turn into sod, bad spring weather for hoeing, bioflim plastic works well but is expensive
    • Practice succession planting: Weather delays made succession planting a bust for us
  • Increase garden produce storage
  • Grow small scale grains – Nope. Grain crops were a bust this year
    • Dent corn
    • Popcorn
    • Amaranth
    • Barley
  • Add more garden perennials
    • Hops vines : Planted 4 starts of Cascade hops
    • Blueberries: Four new plants of two varieties
  • Plant a winter garden: Planted garlic, peas, fava beans, kohlrabi, rutabagas, broccoli, cauliflower, joy choi, and lettuce

Livestock

  • Chickens
    • Move for spring grazing: third time’s charm
    • Additional grazing moves as needed: Doesn’t seem to be needed as they can’t keep up with the pasture they have
  • Sheep
    • Pasture improvements for sheep
  • Pigs
    • Build shelter and pen for pigs: Done
    • Raise two weener pigs for winter butcher
  • Bees
    • Build equipment, select apiary site : Built and selected
    • Capture wild swarms : One captured but it left
    • Monitor summer progress: It’s a bust, no bees to monitor :(

Farm Structures

  • Fencing
    • Install fence line and gates to connect barn and garden
    • Install fence charger in final location
    • Complete northern perimeter fence
  • Water
    • Install new pressure tank
    • Run new wiring and pipes between house, tank, and well
    • Run water line and valve to barn
    • Run water line and multiple valves to garden
    • Install permanent watering for orchard trees and blueberries
  • Restock firewood for winter: Two cords of mixed hazel and cedar wood but not enough for the whole winter
  • Outdoor buildings
    • Build cover for firewood?: It’s a tarp for this winter
    • Build cover for tractor equipment?
    • Rebuild woodshed?
