Baby goslings

We had seven goslings hatch out on Monday. All the male geese took up waiting outside the hatching shelter on the weekend so we knew they were coming soon. The males also stopped eating, trashing their pool, and wandering around while they were on baby monitoring duties.


There are two other geese who are in the process of hatching out eggs. I’m not sure how well this clutch is going to turn out as they keep getting distracted by the new goslings and getting off their nest. One of the two geese was also egg dumping/partly nesting. I’m actually okay if all the eggs don’t hatch out as I don’t want to be completely over run with geese. I’m thinking these two geese should be culled later on as they aren’t good sitters.

    I think this may be be fairly common. I once had a goose sitting on eggs near hatch and when I moved the goose who hatched in a turkey house back in the goose yard with the brood (they’d been free ranging when she started sitting) she got off her eggs and following along with the others. Now I watch for that and put the eggs in an incubator. But this year I’m down to two geese and it seems that they shared one nest until one started sitting and wouldn’t let he daughter sit with her so she started her own nest. I’ll have to watch for the first goslings and grab the second set if the daughter abandons them.

    I find my Pilgrim geese easy to sell. I think we could sell them all. So the more goslings the merrier. It seems there are a number of farmers that like a nice flock running around announcing intruders but never managing to multiply in numbers. And there’s always the person with one goose who wants a mate for them. With the Pilgrims I can promise they bought a pair or the correct sex for theirs. But I admit I’m leaning toward buying Lavender Ice American geese in the future.

    Geese are a great grass fed meat. I think they are the most economical meat we raise. We keep them behind electronetting and move it around to keep them in green grass.

    We freeze split boneless breast separately and it is an easy meat for dinner. I’ve gotten into sous vide and use that for the breast when I plan ahead. The leg/thigh portions are cooked in a slow cooker dish that is a bit more preparation. I rarely roast a whole goose but like to maybe twice a year. When the processing is going great I make that my whole goose for roasting. We still put up most in vacuum portions because they are so convenient for us.

    All that to say I’m not sure I’d cull for that. You may find they’d do just fine if they were the first one to start sitting.

      Thanks. ­čÖé We have been busy but somehow after the baby goes to bed we always feel too tired to blog. I’m going to try short picture posts for a while as that seems less intimidating to my tired brain. hehe
